Craniosacral therapy originated with osteopathic physician Dr. William Sutherland in the 1900s. It is generally used to improve the movement of cerebrospinal fluid and reduce tension through gentle manipulation of the head and spine—"cranio" refers to the bony part of the head known as the cranium, and "sacral" refers to the sacrum, or the bottom of the spine.
William Sutherland discovered that there is a subtle movement in the body, which is rather small and slow. What he found is that the body is basically having a gentle and slow expansion and contraction- which is the coiling and uncoiling of the CNS- Rising and widening, descending and narrowing in a poly rhythmic cycle.
CST is various methods that have been develop to work with this movement. It has been found that when this movement is present and in full expression we have health and when it is inhibited or obscured for any reason we begin to have problems. CST has been developed to optimize and work with these phenomena in many different ways.
Biodynamic means an inside out approach. Bio means life, Dynamic means movement. There are inner forces that are driving our wellness. Our processes, body condition, all are being managed by an inner wisdom, an inner intelligence that is always present. Biodynamic refers to the intention of the practitioner to mobilize, optimize and heighten these inner forces.
In my personal practice and based on my personal experience the three areas where I had the most success using Craniosacral Therapy are:
- Migraine-headaches
- Past head injury/head trauma and
- Mood disorders
Migraines
Migraine is a condition that responds very well to Craniosacral therapy. The majority of the clients who have come to me with a history of chronic headaches, migraine or non-migraine related have benefited for CST.
The degree of benefit varies based on the history of the individual client, the duration of the symptoms and co existing condition which interfere with the client ability to recover. CST, at the very least is a quick and effective way to reduce the intensity of the headaches as well as the frequency of the attacks.
It will work regardless of what other treatment the client is taking currently. Most people report immediate relaxation. The duration of the benefit is individual and improvement may vary from the very first session to few sessions.
Clients may schedule at their convenience, at regular interval when their active complain has resolved, for maintenance purpose, health and wellness management.
Head Injury. Head Trauma
Head injury, head trauma, loss in cognitive abilities or issues related to memory/focus will benefit from CST. It will help to restore the flow of energy in the craniosacral axis (regardless of if there is concussion or not) and may help with the cranial restriction.
Mood Disorders
Particularly in people experiencing depression and anxiety. CST is an extremely relaxing modality that allows people to come into the “rest” phase, allows a deep parasympathetic mode of healing, jumpstarting the healing process. CST will help in the case of anxiety where there is clear unbalance in the nervous system activity, people who report hyper vigilance, phobia, etc.….
